Siamo le alunne della “St. Bernardette’s Primary School” di Belfast, Irlanda del Nord.

L’Irlanda è una grande isola bagnata dall’oceano Atlantico a sud e a ovest, dal mar d’Irlanda e dal canale di San Giorgio a est.

L’Irlanda è divisa politicamente in due parti: la parte più grande è una repubblica indipendente (Republic of Ireland o Eire) con capitale Dublino mentre la parte più piccola, a nord est , (Northern Ireland o Ulster) appartiene politicamente al Regno Unito ed ha come capitale proprio Belfast, la nostra città.

Tutti sanno che in Irlanda si parla l’inglese ma forse non tutti sanno che la lingua principale, per noi, è l’irlandese. L’inglese ce l’hanno portato gli Inglesi, da cui siamo stati governati per lungo tempo e, anzi, noi dell’Irlanda del Nord, lo siamo tuttora.

L’Irlanda è un Paese cattolico ma ci sono pure molti protestanti, specialmente in Irlanda del Nord. Purtroppo i contrasti tra protestanti e cattolici hanno spesso provocato scontri violenti proprio in Irlanda del Nord.

La nostra moneta non è l’Euro, come in molti Paesi europei e come nella repubblica d’Irlanda, ma la sterlina inglese perché il Regno Unito non ha ancora adottato l’Euro.

We are the girls of “St. Bernardette’s Primary School” in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Ireland is quite a big island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean at East and the Irish sea and the St. George channel at West.

We are politically divided into two countries: the bigger part is the republic of Ireland, also called Eire, with Dublin as capital and a smaller part, Northern ireland, also called Ulster, which belongs to the United Kingdom with our town, Belfast, as capital.

Everybody knows that our language is English, not everyboby knows, instead, that our first language is Irish. We speak English after the English introduced their language in our county.

Ireland is a deeply catholic country but there are many protestants, too, especially in Northern Ireland . Unfortunately the clashes between people from the two groups cause violent fights in Ulster.

Currency in Northern Ireland is still the British pound while in the Republic of Ireland they already use the Euro.
